Greece - Thessaloniki

Via Egnatia Galerius Arch.jpg

The Via Egnatia runs beside the monumental Arch of Galerius. This arch was built in A.D. 304 to commemorate the emperor’s victory over the Persians in A.D. 297. Very few buildings remain from the Ottoman and Byzantine era, as the city was largely destroyed in a fire in 1917. The current Boutaris administration has made serious effort in reappraising the multi-ethnic heritage of Thessaloniki.

population exchange2.jpg

We want to get descendants from the compulsory population exchange between Greece and Turkey together. In 1922, approximately 2 million people switched sides. Our goal is to set up two dinners, one in Thessaloniki (Salonika) and one in Izmir (Smyrna) in 2016.
